3- Modals

Should I stay or should I go?
We must go.

We are about to take off to go on our trip to an English speaking country! but... your mother is worried. She wants to give you some advice: this means she wants the best for you, and will tell you what you should do there.
Besides that, she wants to give you some orders and obligations, because there are some things you must or mustn't do in that country.

Should  / must
1) Should
should  is used to give advice ,to make recommendations or to talk about what we think is right or wrong.

e.g. : You should eat more slowly. (AFF)
You shouldn't work so much. (NEG)
2) Must
must is used to talk about an obligation or  probability .

e.g. You must do your homework .(AFF)

mustn't  is used  to forbid something; when something is prohibited. It's an obligation.

 e.g. You mustn't be late.

ACTIVITY
1) Think of examples. What would your mother say? Think of 5 examples using SHOULD (for advice) and 5 examples using MUST/MUSTN'T (for obligations).
For example: You should take a lot of winter clothes. // You mustn't run at the airport.2)
Modals, (by atriara)

2- Being Homesick

Homesick
Do you remember what we talked about the previous lesson? We said the singer felt homesick: she misses her country, her home.
Imagine you travel to another country.

1) Where would you travel?
2) Do you think you will miss your country if you go abroad?
3) Would you travel abroad to learn another language? Why/why not?
Imagine you have to tell your parents that you are leaving to another country. Write them a short note with the following information:
  • The person you're writing to (Dear Mum, Dear John, etc..)
  • The reason (I'm writing to tell you that...)
  • The country you want to go to. (.. I'm going to go abroad/I'm going to go to ....)
  • Why you want to go there
  • A goodbye note.
Be creative! When you finish the letter, everybody in this class will travel to an English speaking country in our minds... let's learn together!
